And just found out that World of Tanks has a Clan War component that is a turn-based strategy game against other clans for territory acquisition.  Move your armies and then you actually fight the battles. That's so hot.

Video Games / I Need You, Baby!

So I've been playing a lot more PC games since I got the new rig a few months back and I'm getting tired of playing them alone.  There are two games that I keep coming back to which would both me way more fun with friends.

Both are free-to-play, so you have no excuse.

The first is League of Legends.  It's a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) pitting two teams against each other. The game looks pretty simple, but the amount of depth is stunning. It takes strategy, tactics, and skill to be successful.  The most frustrating thing is that I mainly play pick-up games and it only takes a couple of disconnecting players or idiots to ruin a match. So, friends needed. It's a good time. I am Eye Tyrant.

The second game is World of Tanks.  I just tried this one out.  You control one of a ton of real-world tanks and are trying to wipe out the enemy team or take their base. The gameplay shares one of the things I loved about Chromehounds: maneuvering.  Rushing into a straight up fight will often get your killed. So it's all about  teamwork and outmaneuvering your opponent. Matches only take a 6-10 minutes, usually, which makes it more bite-sized than League of Legends.  There is also clan support and if there's enough interest I'll look into that.  I am EyeTyrant there.

So, come play with me! It's free!

General Discussion / Re: Controversial?

Basically, what Adam said.

Some dude threw around a bunch of accusations without any evidence against MWP and Cam stepped up and took charge. And then it was silent.

Bottom Line: We don't know if MWP is guilty of what they were accused of. We only know that no evidence was given and MWP responded in a rational, compassionate manner.

Luke's Take: The accuser, who threw firebombs, seems to have an axe to grind against big RPG companies, particularly those who recruit the big names from the indie scene. So "Guy with Agenda who won't give proof to back up his firebombs" + "MWP freelancers respond with good reports" + "Cam Banks taking charge" = MWP is cool in my book. And Marvel RPG is awesome. I already owned the PDF. Tonight I bought the dead tree version at my local FLGS.

Video Games / Armored Core V: The New Chromehounds?
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:30:40 PM »
I really wish FromSoftware had stuck with making Chromehounds a series instead of sticking with their older property, Armored Core.

I have never been a fan of AC due to the frentic pace of battles and difficult controls. It was only when Mollarom mentioned AC V was coming out and looked to have some Chromehounds-like multiplayer features that I took a look.

Hot damn!  Persistent war. Battles over territory, commander mode, custom squads, territory you can upgrade and outfit with turrets and the like...

So, uh, I'm sold.

I will be picking this up on 3/20 and if I can even get just a small taste that's similar to my beloved Chromehounds it will be worth it.

I'll let you know how it is. Until then, check out this video for a look at the features.

Sorry, buddy. The League ended around a year ago.  I know some folks are still playing, though. You could probably hit folks up for some games.

I'd like to hear about the other classes. Here are my impressions:

Jedi Consular - Seer

I'm level 15 now and have a pretty good feel for the class.

Storyline: Pretty good. It's all about your jedi master and a certain problem she has.

Companion: You get hooked up with a tank. That means you can sit back and rain doom.

Abilities: Lot's a pretty decent ranged damage abilities. Force Lift takes out a dude for about a minute and is extremely useful. Channel the Force lets you become amazingly ubercharged for a short period of time. Sprint means I move ridiculously fast out of combat.

The heals came a little later than I'd have liked and don't start off with anything worthwhile. Once you get a few ranks into Force Armor and Deliverance it's a whole 'nother story though.

Overall, it's fun. I can do a little dps when I want but I have great support and control powers.

Skills: Your first five points HAVE to go into Telekinesis. The benefits are so great that there's really no other choice. I hate skills taxes like that, but so be it.

Overall: It's been fun. I look forward to more grouping as now I'm just doing PUGs.  The Sage isn't in-your-face at all,l but has been well-rounded and fun to play.

Here's the thing. Not everyone can afford artists or solid layout or editing or any frills. Is just getting the work out there enough? I think that deserves some accolades, but the product must be judged on it's own merits.

Luke, this project is old enough to vote, smoke cigarettes and go to college. It's hard to afford things in the short term, especially expensive things like, well, a production budget. But surely, somewhere around year ten, he might have noticed the single most important project in his life was starting to take up a fair bit of his time, and thought that warranted a little investment into a savings account for the future?

Or maybe he was having too much fun writing RPG fanfiction to his own universe to notice!

I agree, it would be better to save and invest in what we love but that's not always easy.  And while he's been "working on it for 18 years" that's likely in short fits and bursts or it would have been done sooner. A coworker has been working on a screenplay for 10 years. He's written about 20 pages in that time because he only works on it for a month at a time before leaving it alone for a year. I'm assuming that's how Atlantasia developed, though it's just a guess.

Alternatively, he could have just been clueless as to production value. We have no idea about this guy.

Wow, nice rant, Chibi.  The fires are stoked.

Here's the thing. Not everyone can afford artists or solid layout or editing or any frills. Is just getting the work out there enough? I think that deserves some accolades, but the product must be judged on it's own merits.

Completing and publishing a product should be applauded. But after that it is fair game. If you couldn't afford all the things mentioned above and the product is a complete mess, then it's a mess. You have to be comfortable at putting a product out that you're happy with. From what I've seen, I Atlantasia's production values would not have met my standard, but that's just a reason I'm not buying it.

Sigh.  I have to agree with Adam on this. Complete mixed feelings. I guess I can sum it up in that while this is a product I won't buy, I'm happy the guy was able to meet his goal of producing his game.

Also, to be fair, 99% of game design is masturbation.

I've played every TES game since Daggerfall (including Redguard). Oblivion was gorgeous, but I found it to be composed of a lot of breadth with very little depth. It felt like interacting with a matte painting. Or playing an MMO single-player. Sure, there were some fun quests but everything felt so shallow.

Contrast that to Bioware RPGs like Dragon Age and the Mass Effect series.  Adam calls these games "shallow" and I don't get how he can say that but not about TES.  Those games have limited open worlds where you have the freedom to do some roaming and sidequests but the storyline path is narratively strict. This allows for better set pieces and for a more guided experience I feel make those games much more compelling.

I have heard that Skyrim is much better about this than Oblivion and I'd like to think that's right (since I did enjoy Fallout 3). But I'm not paying $60 to find out.

As for Dark Souls, the game is a right up my alley. It's incredibly challenging in all the right ways, gorgeous, and just flat-out fun.  It's only an RPG in the sense that computer games have always used the term: you have stats you can manipulate.  There are only one branch in the story and NPC interaction is minimal. It feels like a mature Zelda with stat progression.  It doesn't scratch the same itch as the Bioware RPGs or even TES, though. It's a different sort of game.

Yeah, just hit me up if you see me on.  I'm usually doing versus multiplayer but I've fallen in love with the new Horde.  I'm usually up for anything, though.

Iron Tyrants / Re: Melee / base to base questions

1. All normal modifiers apply when in ranged combat but in base contact. The situation negates cover though, since you cross no terrain when drawing LOS between bases.

2. Yes, the evasion modifier applies even in base contact.

Hope you had fun!
