Hi Johnny -

Always glad to hear from new folks!!!  We'd love to do more shows, but it's just clear to us that we can't continue with what we've been doing for all the reasons we've mentioned.

That said, we're toying with various ideas on how to continue with *something*, which will likely be some combination of a new feed for less-edited Actual Play, and then more 'meta' discussion on the main feed.  A new feed mostly so we can keep the non-explicit rating on the main one. :)

Cheers,

Tim

I hope that she continues to be on the mend...keep a close eye on her!  Prop her up with your TPC-winnings!

Hey folks, I've heard from a couple of people that they'd like to hear more AP, but 2 is not enough for us to put 5-10 hrs a week into putting them together, so if you are interested, let us know!

If you thought it was hard to follow with multiple people talking in *this* episode, it only gets worse from here, which is one of the reasons we're leaning toward not releasing any more...it becomes almost impossible to split out the multiple simultaneous conversations...plus people go off to other rooms and such as well...

I'm glad that David called Paul out on with "Do you take risks in real life?  Well, there you go."  Saves me from having to do it. :)

In this episode, Tim and Kim guide you through highlight snippets of an example of actual play of the ninth session of Return to Northmoor – “Exiting the Temple of Art”, so you can see what when right and what went…different.

The crew is a little punchy, and has their first run-in with one of the main baddies, Amara.

The Podge Cast / Re: Episode 59: Travel Broadens The Mind
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:09:28 AM »
I agree wholeheartedly that travel broadens the mind; especially when it comes to gaming.

I can't tell you the number of times that I'll be travelling and constantly be scribbling in my moleskine or into EverNote with little snapshots or ideas for things that inspire me.

It doesn't have to be cities either...walking in the woods I might see an odd-sloped hill, and wonder what might be living at the bottom, or what it would be like to try and scale it against opposition.

Travel is great for helping you come to grips with the core of the human condition...when you strip off the outer veneer of culture, what remains is the core of what great stories are written about.

Anyway, there was also a discussion of music.  The reason I think the music works on Return to Northmoor is:

a) It's not nearly as loud in person as it is on the recording...the multi-band compression process really brings up the music in the otherwise quiet parts, which sounds cool on the recording (as that's how movies and TV works, so it's what we're used to), but isn't nearly so intrusive at the table.

b) One of the players is running it from an iPod, so he can be much more facile with switching it around to fit the mood of what's actually happening than if I was.

I've done a bunch of haunted houses over the years, but I'm such an engineering/robotics geek, that I'm always more interested in *how* they do things than being scared.

To combine that topic with your other implicit topic, this is a controversial Denver institution: http://www.godestiny.org/HHOutreach2009.cfm

* We start the show mid-conversation about Houses of the Blooded. Which you can buy here. The PDF is $5. It’s fantastic.

* Travel in games, most specifically Venice, Italy, which Matt has recently traveled to.

* There are some great television shows that do some good research for your games, The Colony and Surviving Disaster.

* Locations of gaming – what feel are you projecting in your gaming space?

* Are you gaming or are you dating?

* Dating advice

* Luke’s funhouse story, followed by Matt’s funhouse story

General Northmoor Discussion / Re: ENnie Nomination!

Ha!  We only got the Nomination, we didn't win.

And, a new episode dropped yesterday (18).  We've had a bunch of downloads from iTunes, not sure why yours is showing 17.5 still?

Thanks,

Tim

In this episode, Tim and Kim go over the scenes for the ninth session of play. We go over all the scenes from this session, and lay out the feel of each, so you can hit the materials well-prepared to run it.

The discussion topic is around alignment, and we give a shout out to highly-contributive listener Rob Winder.

Scenes in this Session, entitled "Exiting the Temple of Art":

1) Amara Strikes - Their tormentor finally reveals herself, and they meet the fifth member of the old adventuring party.

2) Nolar's Law - They return to the Lost Village to discover that former sword-teacher to the King Nolar has taken over the village and declared martial law, and that their Mentor is a wanted criminal!

What mixer(s) hits the low cost/high quality mark?

Here's where you should start:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/computers-peripherals/audio-interfaces

That's a list of products of the type that Brant and I recommend.

I have one of these, and I'd recommend it to you as a starting point if you only have 2 people:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-Fast-Track-USB-Computer-Recording-Interface?sku=703606

and one of these:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-ProFire-610-Firewire-Recording-Interface?sku=247046

and I love them both....my big complaint with both is the 'taper' of the gain knob...it goes from very quiet to medium quiet to mostly quiet to VERY LOUD.  It's not a linear taper, which means you can end up futzing with it if you try and maximize your signal-to-noise.  For podcasting, if you have a way to 'normalize' your recording, either with a 'normalize' function, or something like Levelator, it doesn't matter as much.

The Digidesign stuff is nice, but you pay a premium because they work with ProTools, which is serious overkill for most podcasts.

These are very nice:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-UX2-with-PF?sku=250004

But you pay a premium for the guitar processor "PodFarm" that comes with it.

Those are all to get the audio *in* to your computer.  When it comes to getting it out, well, there's a whole list of possibilities there, but most podcasters do just fine with basic headphones and PC speakers.

I use Studio Monitors like this:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-HS50M-5-Powered-Studio-Monitor-Each?sku=601417

But those are $400 a pair, so not something you need unless you are really down in the guts of audio nuance.

Hopefully that gets you started!

Video Games / Re: Finished Bioshock
« on: August 25, 2009, 02:12:26 PM »
Bioshock was absolutely one of my favorite games of all time, but like many games it suffered from an overlong endgame....

IMO, that's because so many game reviews include "This game sux!  Only 7900 hours of gameplay!  I only had to skip 5 classes to finish!"

Awesome!  Glad to see that things can translate across systems and platforms!

Thanks so much for your feedback, Jaw!
