Listener Hacks
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:01:06 PM »
So, I'm always interested in other peoples' rpg hacks.  There are only a precious few rpgs that I run with no changes at all (Mouse Guard and Monsters and Other Childish Things come to mind) and part of why I am so into game design is because I am picky and like to tinker with concepts.  I was wondering if there are any listener hacks out there that people would like to share?

I recently started playing DDO, and it occurred to me that some of the things I liked about DDO could be applied to D&D without a lot of trouble.  I wrote out preliminary thoughts here

in case anyone is interested.

Anyway, I should also mention - I love the show.  Whenever I get an idea for a gaming podcast, I just find one that does it better than I could and become a listener.  So thank you for saving me a lot of work!

Thanks for the feedback! It is always good to know listeners are more than just a stat I can look at, but people with comments and ideas.  :D

And if listeners have ideas on hacks, it is always interesting and exciting to hear what they are. There are so many of them over the years that I have done that I have forgotten most of them myself, and I am sure others out there are the same, but with better memory and/or still hacking away with verve and vigor at game systems.

I also took a look at your DDO post, and though I have not played it, I can see the benefits it has over the tabletop version, and understand the reasons to modify or add to the system to make it simpler and less of long haul that sometimes with a D&D game.

I have an entire RPG that is built to be "plug and play" to jam into other RPGs called "Piecemeal the RPG".

One very simple hack that I've been using in my current GURPS game is to apply "Let It Ride" to dice rolls, a'la Burning Wheel.  Actually, I tend to apply "Let It Ride" to every game I run now, since it is so much better than constantly clamoring for another roll.

In case "Let It Ride" isn't something you haven't heard of before, here's a link to it on the Burning Wiki, nestled in amongst other BW rules:
