Card Game at GenCon
« on: September 04, 2011, 04:33:12 PM »
What was the name of the card game we played at GenCon? Not the first one we played, I think that was called Thunderstone or something. I am talking about the second one, where Eric ruined the entire concept of fun in the entire universe.

Legend has it that game was Ascension, though I wasn't there, so my third-hand knowledge may be faulty.
Can't say more. Joe says I have to write.

It was indeed Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer.  IIRC, you've got an iphone, right Rich?  The iApp is a flawless reproduction of the game - and you can play with anyone in the game center.

And it's like $5.

And best of all, I don't shuffle the deck, so you can be assured of a much less suicide inducing experience.
Regulate.

I was in an Ascension tournament at PAX East where you could win the game if you won. The demo guy would not give it to me when I was the only one that showed up. He asked me to hang out until he found new players. Tournament finally started two hours later, but I did not wait around. (I've found there's one particular strategy that is more effective than others, and that always discourages me from playing that game. Dominion is the worst at this, though Kingsburg has the flaw as well.)

Half of the game is understanding the strategy.

The other half of the game is luck.

Really, when you get down to it: after a certain barrier to entry, the game is just random anyway.
